http://ocean1211.blogspot.com/2011/04/blog-post_09.html

MUET Writing Paper Mid-Year 2011

Question 1
A survey was carried out on two different age groups of professionals to determine what they consider to be the main goals for the year ahead. Using only the information provided, write about the results of the survey. In your writing, you are to link the profile of the professionals with their goals. You should write 150 to 200 words.

Example of marking scheme and
writing skills for Question 1
**Surely not for the question above as I have just got this paper from the examiner in the morning^^
http://ocean1211.blogspot.com/2011/02/muet-writing-paper-question-1-marking.html#more

Question 2

"The most valuable thing in life is friendship."
Do you agree? Discuss.
You should write at least 350 words.

Sample Answer:
It is true that no ‘man is an island’ meaning that no one in this world can live alone without friendship. That person would be very socially challenged as he or she would miss the camaraderie and life experiences that come with friendship. However, I completely disagree with the statement that the most valuable thing in life is friendship as there are certainly more important and priceless things in life besides this. In this essay, I will outline how life itself is more valuable than friendship, and elaborate on why family and the individual’s principles in life are ranked higher.

First and foremost, before one can enjoy the beauty of friendship, one must surely value life itself or in other words, we should value our health. This is because, the quality of our life is the single most important criteria in life if we are to live a meaningful and wholesome life. Moreover, without good health, we will be hard pressed to do even the simplest of tasks like feed ourselves or relieve ourselves without the help of doctors, nurses and caregivers. For example, if we are paralyzed, lost our sight, hearing or ability to speak or even a simple case of a fever or allergic reactions, then the quality of our life is greatly reduced and no amount of friendship can make us healthy again. Therefore, while friends can stand by us in our time of need, pristine health is still the most valuable asset in our lives.

Secondly, we are no one without our family as indeed blood is thicker than water. This means that however you analyze it, friendships will almost always play second fiddle because family always comes first. Furthermore, if we do not value our family above others, then there must be a problem among the family members that has caused their relationship to be strained. For instance, people tend to turn away from family if the family member(s) themselves are the ones to cause them to react negatively such as divorced parents, abusive parents or siblings and so on. Thus, when people consider friendship to be the most valuable thing in life, more often than not they may come from a troubled household.

Last but not least, a person’s principles in life is by far more valuable than friendship alone. This is due to the fact that each person needs to have a code of ethics, quite often prescribed by their individual religions. In addition, this code will guide each person to live their lives according to the good and right principles. Take for example, if an individual has set his principles to do good, then no amount of friendship especially negative influence from friends, can shake his hold on his principles and cause him to commit undesirable deeds like smoking, stealing, raping, murdering and others. Hence, if a person values friendship so much to the point where he is willing to break his principles, then he has done a serious misdeed against himself and will most likely regret his actions later in life.

In short, friendship is the rainbow of life as it colors our horizons with invaluable experiences but without good health, a supportive family and strong principles, life becomes empty and meaningless. In my opinion, it is beyond a shadow of a doubt that I still firmly believe that friendship is not the most valuable thing in life. Our government can encourage people to prioritize health, family and principles in life by organizing awareness campaigns especially in primary schools where the younger generation should learn about priorities in life because they are the leaders of tomorrow.

Essay 13:The Advantages And Disadvantages To A Developing Nation Of Receiving Economic Aid From Other Nations

Here is an essay i want to share with you all as i like this essay.

Answer

The spirit of giving aid is magnanimous, it blesses the nation that gives and the nation that receives. An aid cannot be equated to alms giving nor it is a doling of charity. An aid assumes that the receiver can be sustained at the right time. It also assumes an equality sharing of the products not in the economic sense but in a social and altruistic(利他) sense.

After the World War II, the USA found the wisdom(智慧) of helping under-developed nations and those that were battered(连击) by the war. By virtue of her position, the USA could help. Of course willingness was there and Marshall Plan under which the USA helped the European nations has become a classic example. The USA had a surplus of many goods which she could easily part with. This, of course, had an economic advantage for her for otherwise she would have to face a glut(大量) of goods leading on to recession(衰退).

http://ocean1211.blogspot.com/2011/04/blog-post.html

Essay 12:The Absence Of Sporting Spirit And Its Consequences

The Absence Of Sporting Spirit And Its Consequences(后果)

The world from the dawn(开始) of civilization(文明) has been enjoying sports. One of the pastimes(消遣) of the rulers(统治者) was to arrange for periodical(定期) sports. It may be hunting, chariot race(战车比赛) , horse riding, wrestling(摔角) and boxing. Organized sports were popular in Greece, especially Olympia from which modem Olympic games have derived(起源) their names. Sports were for fun and frolics(欢乐). In the middle ages sports were very popular in European countries. Sports are supposed to develop many good qualities. There may be healthy competition and rivalry(对抗) and never enmity(仇) or bitterness. It is and should be for the sports' sake(为了) and not for winning the laurels(桂冠). This is the real sporting spirit. There are rules and regulations(规例) in play and games. The sporting spirit implies the following of rules whether one wins or loses. The outcome or the result is not the important thing but how the game is played.

A real sportsman takes things easy. Take for instance, an angler sitting by the river side from morning till evening, casting(投) his line into the water. He may not always be lucky to have a catch. Still he whistles(口哨) back home happy in the evening when the night sets in. It is not the catch that is the point but the angler's(钓鱼者) attitude. He cannot grow angry and break the fishing rod. Then he has lost the fun. So too in any game the winner or the loser, much more so the latter(后者) must be able to take things easy. A real sportsman does not lose his head when he wins nor is he bowled over when he loses.

There Are No Everlasting Friends Nor Everlasting Enemies In The World!

No permanent friends, no permanent enemies.
Only permanent interests.
There Are No Everlasting Friends
Nor Everlasting Enemies In The World*
I am sorry but i have to say this.
From what i have seen, it can be concluded that
most of friends have become realistic when
Talking About $$!!!
Money is a very sensitive issue!
Maybe money is the root of evil?

Anyway, in my opinion
"Life is like a dream"
I totally agree with this statement!
Because i understand the truth of life is a dream
and hence it makes me feel better
and being able to build emotional intelligence

My main objective in writing this post is
to articulate my thoughts
clearly, concisely and completely.
Besides that, i have to remind myself
to become smart when cope with money
especially on sale!
I know, maybe you all sure feel blurry.
This is just my self-realization
and introspection post, you may neglect it.

For the sake of our soul,
we must become dedicated to
our spiritual growth and personal development.
Although life is just a dream,
but we have to build a nice dream, right?

Essay 11:The Rising Fuel Price Has Pushed Up The Price Of Other Consumer Products. How Will This Affect The Society?

Q:
The rising fuel price has pushed up the price of other consumer products. How will this affect the society? Give your opinion. You should write at least 350 words.

When tackling this question, one should think in terms of : 1. short term effect, 2. mid term and finally 3. long term. This question gauges a student's level of critical thinking and prediction.

Sample Answer
Money is always an issue in today's era of materialism. Most people need it for basic survival while the lucky few indulge in luxuries without worrying about money. In my opinion, I strongly agree that the rising fuel price has pushed up the price of other consumer products and this will definitely affect the society. In this essay, I would like to touch on the effects this price increase has on society today, namely increasing vice activities, widening the gap between the rich and the poor and affecting the population trend in the long term.

First and foremost, society will immediately be affected by the rise in fuel prices because consumer products will be more costly and this leads to an increase of vice activities. This is because basic necessities such as rice, flour, sugar and so on will be in great demand and some warehouses will store or hoard the items to further increase the price of the product. Moreover, in the newspapers today, reports of smuggling of these items prove that this vice activity is on the rise. For example, the recent sugar price hike caused a furor among the Malaysian society as it costs more fuel to travel to and from the supermarket and when arriving, most places had run out of stock even though the government had allocated 2kg of sugar to one person. Therefore, the fuel price increase had definitely caused more hardships to society today.

http://ocean1211.blogspot.com/2011/03/blog-post_24.html

The Mines Education Fair 2011

Yesterday, my school form 6 students included me were went to the education fair of 2011 held in The Mines. Did you ever go there especially for SPM and STPM 2010 graduates? Well, we went there by bus which the bus expenses was sponsored by the school. So, we don't have to pay everything^^We met at the school gate at 7.30 am. Then, the bus started at 8 o'clock in the morning and it took us an hour to get there.

Although STPM exam is coming, but i still confusing about my future. I still can't even find my life goal. On the other hand, R&D presentation is starting from mid-April, but i didn't finish it yet!! For the MUET test, it is starting 13 April. I get nervous because my final school test for speaking part is just only 25 marks!! GOSHH...

As the popular saying goes, "never burn incense when all is well, but clasp Buddha's feet when in distress." Although i understand the idiom, but i made the same mistake haha.

Well, i saw many university exhibition there includes UM, UPM, USM, Unimas, UUM, UKM and so on. As i haven't finish my STPM, so i just take entry requirements and information without asking too much. But i don't know why my friend keeps asked me why i didn't ask anything? So weird. Why must i ask?

Anyway, i am glad, i get many souvenirs from the education fair^^After that, we returned back from The Mines to school at around 3.30 pm.

Essay 10: The Benefits Of Hosting International Sporting Events And The Ways To Improve The Standard Of Sports In The Country

Mind Map
The benefits of hosting international sporting events absolutely outweigh the disadvantages. In fact, many countries raised their hands to host the 2022 World Cup last year. There are three reasons why the benefits always outweighs the disadvantages in the host country.

First of all, hosting international sports events can give a good chance to make a steady infrastructure. It includes making the new network of public transportation such as subways constructed for the Olympics in China. Consequently, it would also lead to a comfortable life after the events.

Secondly, it would grow national pride in their minds. Achieving success as the international host brought about the confidence in leadership and techniques. We can historically regard one of the reasons why Japan developed sharply after World War II was due to success in the Tokyo Olympics.

Finally, it results in galvanizing tourism. The fans from overseas would spend much money on hotel, Olympic merchandise, and traditional foods. ("Sport goods" or "sporting goods" is a very general term relating to equipment, instruments, or tools related to certain sports (example: hockey stick, baseball glove, football helmet, shoulder pads). The more correct term would be "Olympic merchandise" which refers to souvenirs.) In addition to this, it could play an important role in the tourism industry in terms of sightseeing tours.

It can be said then that the host of an international sporting event will create many advantages for their country. For that reason, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Hosting Major International Sports Events: Comparing Asia And Europe

News:

Major international sporting events have an extraordinary(特殊) capacity(容量) to generate emotionally powerful and shared experiences. Events like the Olympic Games, the Football World Cup, and other major sporting events reveal(揭示) both the appeal(呼吁)and elusiveness(难以捉摸) of sport. In the age of global television, the capacity of major sports events to shape and project images of the host, both domestically and globally, make them highly attractive for political and economic elites(精英).

The pursuit(追求) of hosting major
(or ‘mega’) sports events has become
increasingly popular among governments,
corporations, and civic ‘boosters’ worldwide.
They argue that major economic,
developmental, political, and
socio-cultural benefits will flow
from them, easily justifying(辩解) the costs
and risks involved. Numerous studies fuel
the popular belief that sport is a generator
of national as well as local economic
and social development. Economically
it has been viewed as an industry
around which cities can devise(设备) urban(城市)
regeneration strategies. Socially it has
been viewed as a tool for the development
of urban communities and the
reduction of social exclusion and crime.
Most of these studies, however, have
been conducted in advance of the events
on behalf of interested parties without
adequate measurement of final and
intermediate outputs as well as inputs.
Critical post-event studies point to their
uneven impacts. Research shows that
costs have usually been underestimated
while beneficial impacts have been overestimated.
