Title: Termites Destroy Taiwan Student's 8-yr Savings, Broken Overseas Study Dreams
A young college graduate lost most of her NT$1 million (US$33,375) savings stored in a safe at home after the cash was destroyed by termites.
An official from Taiwan's Investigation Bureau on Tuesday advised the public to keep their savings in financial institutions for safekeeping, citing a recent example in which a young college graduate lost most of her NT$1 million (US$33,375) savings stored in a safe at home after the cash was destroyed by termites.
The case reported in the local tabloid Apple Daily said a college graduate found in April that the money she had amassed over eight years to fund her overseas studies had been reduced to shreds by termites. The woman had been putting money away since high school in a safe at home.
According to the department of investigation, she is around more than 20 years old with long hair, graduated from Xinbei City Fu Jen Univeristy under faculty of management, she hoped to study abroad since childhood, intent to go America or Canada for further education. Unfortunately, her childhood wish would never come true.
The woman sent the damaged bills to the Investigation Bureau, but efforts to salvage the money were unsuccessful, said Liu Hui-fang, an expert in the forensics branch of the bureau who spent a week trying to piece the bills together.
The Bank of Taiwan allowed the woman to exchange the damaged bills for only a little over NT$26,000 (US$869), pointing out that the rest were beyond redemption.
Hu Hsing-yung, a section chief of the forensics arm of the bureau, said people should keep their banknotes in safe places such as banks and post offices to prevent their cash from damage.
