MUET Writing Essay Format 2013

Time flies fast, it's been 2 years I took MUET exam. Anyway, as promised in early January, I will write atleast 1 Muet essay this year as to show my sincere thankful to all blog visitors. Nevertheless, after referring to Madam Audrey (Muet My Way), I realize that it's quite challenging because the formats keep changing and uncertainty. Moreover, the Muet academic essay writing question often leads to misunderstanding, which means that MPM's marking scheme for writing still has so much difference as compared to majority of students thoughts, finally resulted in low marks/ grades. Hence, to avoid mistake, I will get as more accurate informations as possible in order to write a correct essay =)  In this post, I'm going to share Muet Writing Essay Format.

Example of Thesis Statement
(a)
They say that money makes the world go round. And indeed it does as without money, life would be very difficult as in today’s society, nothing is free. The side effect however is that people are becoming more materialistic; more concerned with making money and what money can buy. But how much money is enough? Is it ever enough? To some, it will never be enough. In my opinion, I truly believe that this statement is true and that people are becoming more materialistic in nature. In this essay, I will discuss how materialism has affected modern society’s way of life on an individual level, the country’s economy as well as our spiritual and moral beliefs.
_________________________________________________________________
(b)
It is true that no ‘man is an island’ meaning that no one in this world can live alone without friendship. That person would be very socially challenged as he or she would miss the camaraderie and life experiences that come with friendship. However, I completely disagree with the statement that the most valuable thing in life is friendship as there are certainly more important and priceless things in life besides this. In this essay, I will outline how life itself is more valuable than friendship, and elaborate on why family and the individual’s principles in life are ranked higher.

Are you getting Depression? Let's take this test!

Depression is a major concern today. Depression is the most common mental health disorder in the world. What is depression? Generally, it may be described as feeling sad, blue, unhappy, miserable, or down in the dumps. Most of us feel this way at one time or another for short periods. Sometimes, it's not always evident when somebody is depressed. Everyone handles depression in different method. But if you choose not to share your feelings, it could make the depression to get worse and worse. Nowadays, people are depressed for so many reasons. Losing a loved one, exams, drugs, alcohol or peer pressure are a few examples of why people become depressed.

However, I believe that the significant factor for suicide starts from "depression". Hence, we cannot neglect the impact of depression. Most people will choose self-medication to treat mental illness, stress and depression. Self-medication is often seen as gaining personal independence from established medicine. Maybe it's helpful, but it's not as effective as the combination of counselling and medication. If your self-medication discontinued, depression will return back. What is counselling? It is involved in talk therapy which you talk about your feelings and thoughts, and pyschologists will help you learn how to deal with them so that you can change your behaviours and thoughts substantially.

As the saying goes, 'Prevention is better than cure.' It is the most important section to outline the prevention method for depression. Firstly, do not drink alcohol or use illegal drugs. These substances can make depression worse and might lead to thoughts of suicide. Next, take your medication exactly as your doctor instructed. Ask your doctor about the possible side effects and what you should do if you have any. Thirdly, learn to recognize the early signs or symptoms that your depression is getting worse.

The following tips might help you feel better:
  • Get more exercise
  • Maintain good sleep habits
  • Seek out activities that bring you pleasure
  • Volunteer or get involved in group activities
  • Talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling, eg. parents, friends, colleague
  • Try to be around people who are caring and positive
Luckily, nowadays effective treatments exist to help bring people's lives back under control. Yet tragically many people suffering from this illness go without diagnosis and treatment. So please get your treatment as soon as possible to avoid the increase in depression. The following depression test is a tool that help you recognize the symptoms of depression and realize to decide to get help or not. Please note that only a licensed professional can diagnose depression!!!

Here is my result. Oops, I get 47/100!! Is this level be considered critical?? How about you?

Nobody will laugh at you even though you have depression.

Essay 15: ETHNIC RELATIONS

This essay just give an idea about the ethnic relations.

FUNCTIONALISM THEORIES

most concerned with majority-minority relations because of their potential for serious disruption in a society, i.e. it is not functional for a society to become severely divided along lines of race, ethnicity or religion

if a society has ethnic inequality, one of two conditions must be present – either the inequality itself is meeting some kind of social need in the society, or more likely the inequality is a result of some social condition that is in some ways useful to society

in general sense of stratification: possible function - creates incentives, e.g. in terms of jobs some jobs are more critical to the functioning of society and require longer, more difficult periods of training and thus these jobs carry greater rewards, therefore socioeconomic inequality is necessary and inevitable – however no explanation is given for why stratification should occur on basis of race or ethnicity

in case of race, ethnic minorities fill an important need by their willingness to work at jobs and/or wages that are unattractive to others but needed – fills essential jobs, especially true for immigrant minorities who view such positions as superior to those available in their place of origin, and can be applied to rural migrants to cities

Key function: it sees ethnic stratification not so much as something that is useful to society itself but rather ethnic stratification is the product of ethnocentrism which is what is useful – because society needs a shared identity, a "we" feeling, cooperation which is only possible when society’s members share certain basic values

most functionalists agree that ethnic stratification is a problem and it ought to be minimized but it is seen as inevitable as long as there is diversity within a society, because of need for consensus and group identity, ethnocentrism will always tend to occur

The ways to minimize ethnocentrism are:
to reduce cultural differences between dominant group and minorities

to eliminate legal and other barriers set up by dominant group to exclude minorities,
to develop any skills that may be lacking in the minority groups to enable them to participate in society

this will result in assimilation which is only way out

Criticisms:
burden of change is on minority groups

minority groups will experience hostility

most inequality is inherited not earned and there is not free mobility between generations, and thus incentive argument cannot work

Essay 14: "Friends Should Never Hide Anything From Each Other." Do You Agree?

No man is an island. Everyone depends on his friends to a certain extent. Ever since man formed a system of verbal communication, all people have been in constant chatter with one another.

Relationships are important to man, so much that people may shape their entire lifestyles simply to find favor with their clique or circle of friends. Therefore, much caution must be applied when dealing with our friends, especially in our speech. So then, must we always tell our friends the whole truth and nothing but the truth or is it sometimes simply none of their business?

One thing is clear: finding out that your friend has lied to you always hurts. In cases where lies have been told to hurt you or other parties on purpose, the friendship will never be the same. If the lie caused you great damage, the friendship will not be salvageable. Who would want a treacherous person for a friend? Yet, even when the matter is not of great importance, little lies can lead to the spoiling of relationships. I have a friend who often tells little untruths.

Sometimes, he exaggerates circumstances a little, just to impress others, sometimes he tells half-truths to get out of trouble, sometimes, he makes up stories just to entertain his friends. Personally, I just do not feel comfortable with him. You see, I just never know whether he is telling the truth or one more of his little lies.

Essay 13:The Advantages And Disadvantages To A Developing Nation Of Receiving Economic Aid From Other Nations

Here is an essay i want to share with you all as i like this essay.

Answer

The spirit of giving aid is magnanimous, it blesses the nation that gives and the nation that receives. An aid cannot be equated to alms giving nor it is a doling of charity. An aid assumes that the receiver can be sustained at the right time. It also assumes an equality sharing of the products not in the economic sense but in a social and altruistic(利他) sense.

After the World War II, the USA found the wisdom(智慧) of helping under-developed nations and those that were battered(连击) by the war. By virtue of her position, the USA could help. Of course willingness was there and Marshall Plan under which the USA helped the European nations has become a classic example. The USA had a surplus of many goods which she could easily part with. This, of course, had an economic advantage for her for otherwise she would have to face a glut(大量) of goods leading on to recession(衰退).

Essay 12:The Absence Of Sporting Spirit And Its Consequences

The Absence Of Sporting Spirit And Its Consequences(后果)

The world from the dawn(开始) of civilization(文明) has been enjoying sports. One of the pastimes(消遣) of the rulers(统治者) was to arrange for periodical(定期) sports. It may be hunting, chariot race(战车比赛) , horse riding, wrestling(摔角) and boxing. Organized sports were popular in Greece, especially Olympia from which modem Olympic games have derived(起源) their names. Sports were for fun and frolics(欢乐). In the middle ages sports were very popular in European countries. Sports are supposed to develop many good qualities. There may be healthy competition and rivalry(对抗) and never enmity(仇) or bitterness. It is and should be for the sports' sake(为了) and not for winning the laurels(桂冠). This is the real sporting spirit. There are rules and regulations(规例) in play and games. The sporting spirit implies the following of rules whether one wins or loses. The outcome or the result is not the important thing but how the game is played.

A real sportsman takes things easy. Take for instance, an angler sitting by the river side from morning till evening, casting(投) his line into the water. He may not always be lucky to have a catch. Still he whistles(口哨) back home happy in the evening when the night sets in. It is not the catch that is the point but the angler's(钓鱼者) attitude. He cannot grow angry and break the fishing rod. Then he has lost the fun. So too in any game the winner or the loser, much more so the latter(后者) must be able to take things easy. A real sportsman does not lose his head when he wins nor is he bowled over when he loses.

Essay 11:The Rising Fuel Price Has Pushed Up The Price Of Other Consumer Products. How Will This Affect The Society?

Q:
The rising fuel price has pushed up the price of other consumer products. How will this affect the society? Give your opinion. You should write at least 350 words.

When tackling this question, one should think in terms of : 1. short term effect, 2. mid term and finally 3. long term. This question gauges a student's level of critical thinking and prediction.

Sample Answer
Money is always an issue in today's era of materialism. Most people need it for basic survival while the lucky few indulge in luxuries without worrying about money. In my opinion, I strongly agree that the rising fuel price has pushed up the price of other consumer products and this will definitely affect the society. In this essay, I would like to touch on the effects this price increase has on society today, namely increasing vice activities, widening the gap between the rich and the poor and affecting the population trend in the long term.

First and foremost, society will immediately be affected by the rise in fuel prices because consumer products will be more costly and this leads to an increase of vice activities. This is because basic necessities such as rice, flour, sugar and so on will be in great demand and some warehouses will store or hoard the items to further increase the price of the product. Moreover, in the newspapers today, reports of smuggling of these items prove that this vice activity is on the rise. For example, the recent sugar price hike caused a furor among the Malaysian society as it costs more fuel to travel to and from the supermarket and when arriving, most places had run out of stock even though the government had allocated 2kg of sugar to one person. Therefore, the fuel price increase had definitely caused more hardships to society today.

Essay 10: The Benefits Of Hosting International Sporting Events And The Ways To Improve The Standard Of Sports In The Country

Mind Map
The benefits of hosting international sporting events absolutely outweigh the disadvantages. In fact, many countries raised their hands to host the 2022 World Cup last year. There are three reasons why the benefits always outweighs the disadvantages in the host country.

First of all, hosting international sports events can give a good chance to make a steady infrastructure. It includes making the new network of public transportation such as subways constructed for the Olympics in China. Consequently, it would also lead to a comfortable life after the events.

Secondly, it would grow national pride in their minds. Achieving success as the international host brought about the confidence in leadership and techniques. We can historically regard one of the reasons why Japan developed sharply after World War II was due to success in the Tokyo Olympics.

Finally, it results in galvanizing tourism. The fans from overseas would spend much money on hotel, Olympic merchandise, and traditional foods. ("Sport goods" or "sporting goods" is a very general term relating to equipment, instruments, or tools related to certain sports (example: hockey stick, baseball glove, football helmet, shoulder pads). The more correct term would be "Olympic merchandise" which refers to souvenirs.) In addition to this, it could play an important role in the tourism industry in terms of sightseeing tours.

It can be said then that the host of an international sporting event will create many advantages for their country. For that reason, the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Essay 9:The World Today Is Turning More To Electronic Communications Such As The E-mail, Facebook And Short Message System (SMS). What Is Your Opinion Of This Growing Trend?

The world today is turning more to electronic communications such as the e-mail, Facebook and Short message System (SMS). What is your opinion of this growing trend? Discuss. You should write at least 350 words.

Sample Answer
Everywhere we turn today, the world is crowded with people busy typing SMSes on their Nokias or iPhones or someone is staring unblinkingly at a Facebook or Yahoo page on the computer screen. Whether you like it or not, the age of Information Technology is upon us, and we can either learn new skills and adapt to this new technology, or be forever lost and stuck in the older generation. In my opinion, I am fully convinced that this growing trend is the way of the future, and it brings countless benefits to mankind. In this essay, I will discuss three positive effects of electronic communication, namely its efficiency, enhances communication and creates a borderless world community.

First and foremost, more and more people are relying on e-mail, Facebook, Short Message System (SMS) and other types of electronic communication tools because of its high efficiency. This is because in today's age of globalisation, we need information at the tip of our fingers. Moreover, with the use of these tools, we can increase the speed of getting the necessary and relevant information within seconds and this will increase our productivity. For example, gone are the days of using 'snail mail' or regular letters using stamps and envelopes and many more examples of 'old' technology because it is simply too slow and inefficient. Therefore, these e-communication tools increases the access to important information which is why the new generation is fully accepting this growing trend.

Secondly, this form of technology enhances communication among people today. This means that when we use SMS, e-mails and websites like Facebook, we are able to communicate clearly and directly to our target audience. Furthermore, people today find that the message is more important than the form it comes in as an e-mail in short but clear sentences is just as good or even better than a long and formal letter. For instance, an SMS can give clear instructions in just a few words and this communicates what needs to be done quickly and directly. Thus, when the intended message can be spread clearly using short and clear information like in SMSes and emails, communication can be enhanced and there will be less problems of miscommunication.

Last but not least, e-communication creates a borderless community in the world we live in today. This is due to the fact that the boundaries that separate each country becomes less relevant when information is transferred without limitations. In addition, the world would be a better place because there is a sense of 1-World commitment, respect and tolerance for the global community through efficient and clear e-communication. Take for example, we are able to connect with people on an international basis using Facebook, Friendster, Tagged, Hotmail, Yahoo and others. Hence, these tools will enhance global unity and create a more peaceful world.

In conclusion, this growing trend has many positive effects not just to individuals but the global society in terms of efficiency, enhancing communicative skills and shaping a borderless community. In my opinion, I still firmly believe that this latest trend is the best way forward and if we do not catch up, we will be left behind by the tide of development. Our government can encourage the proper usage of electronic communications by increasing communication amenities and broadband accessibility especially in rural areas so that they can enjoy the same facilities as city-folks therefore balancing the development of our country towards achieving Vision 2020.

Essay 8: You Have Enough Money To Purchase Either A House Or A Business. Which Would You Choose To Buy?

Question:
You have enough money to purchase either a house or a business. Which would you choose to buy? Give specific reasons to explain your choice.

Answer 1
People always have to decide how they will invest their money after they have saved it for a while. Some people invest in a house but some people invest in a business. If I have enough money, I will purchase a house as it has no any disadvantage to me.

Purchasing a house means that it belongs to me as my property. I can feel that I do not waste my money. It is just turned into a house. Besides, the house price is rising higher and higher so this is a good investment. If I have my children, they will not have to purchase a new house. They can take one of mine. If I let them find money and afford a house themselves, I can not imagine how the house price will be at that time, and how hard my children will have to work to earn enough money. Moreover, I can either move to the new house after I get bored with the old one. Some people in my country have more than one house. One is in the city near their workplaces. Another is quite far away from the city so they can have their rest there on weekends. In addition, I can let other people rent this house if I do not need to live there that time. By doing this, I can also have income from my house.

On the other hand, purchasing a business is full of risk. As I am not good at business, I need to take time in studying the business to purchase one. Even if I have studied well on the business, it is still risky. I would rather not try on my own business although I can make more profit on it.

It is obvious for me which choice I will choose after compare two options, to purchase a house or a business. Purchasing a house is surely my last answer.

Essay 7: Many People Have A Close Relationship With Their Pets. These People Treat Their Birds, Cats, Or Other Animals As Members Of Their Family.

Many people have a close relationship with their pets.  These people treat their birds, cats, or other animals as members of their family. In your opinion, are such relationships good? Why or why not? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Sample 1#
Being near a pet, with a lot of people, always has positive and negative effects. There are a few people who do not want to have a close relationship with their pets and treat them as members of their family. But in my own experience, if we do that,we gain more than we lose.

When we are have a pet, it means we are have a great and loyal friend. Let’s take one example. After a hard-working day, I often get stressed and tense. But when I come home, my dog wags its tail and barks to welcome me home. It often makes me feel a bit better. I frequently take my dog to the park near my house. That is the time for me to relax, enjoy the fresh air, and escape from my problems in real life.

Besides, you can learn a lot from taking care of your pets. Throughout a long time taking care of my dog, I know how hard it is to raise and teach it to do the right things. And it reminds me about my parents, who always take care of me, stand by me when I need them. So, this can also teach us more about responsibility, love, etc.

Friendship----You Laugh I Laugh? You Jump I Jump?

I get it from facebook^^
It's quite funny.
What's your opinion on friendship?
Is it you jump I jump?

Life is so short that we need someone to share our thoughts and feelings. Definitely, a thought would arise in our mind asking who it could be whom we can trust so closely. Answer might be who someone closes to you, but who? Parents, brother, sister…..! Apparently, it hardly comes to anyone’s mind a “true friend”. You are no nearer to true friendship than if you choose them for commercial reason. Besides who are you that you should be setting a price upon your friendship? It is enough for any man that he has the divine power of making friends, and he must leave it to that power of making friends.

Question:
Some people choose friends who are different from themselves. Others choose friends who are similar to themselves. Compare the advantages of having friends who are different from you with the advantages of having friends who are similar to you. Which kind of friends do you prefer for yourself? Why?

Essay 6: Today the High Sales of Popular Consumer Goods Reflect the Power of Advertising and Not the Real Needs of the Society in Which They are Sold.

My MUET Essay Question^^
Question: Today the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold. What are your views on this? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge on experience.

Nowadays millions of companies produce billions of products and the role of advertising is quite obvious. Ads help consumers to find the goods or services of their needs. However, do our needs grow equally fast as the number of products? Some market analysts insist modern commercials are not merely matchmakers of a product and a consumer, but actively interfere with buyer’s desires, developing artificial needs.

Undoubtedly, advertisement guides people through the market, serves those who do not have time to learn differences between goods. These products are probably the same, but loyalty to a particular brand, formed by a commercial helps make a choice. When a person buys one mobile phone out of 50 models, he thinks he made his choice himself. But that was a commercial who told him about the features of this phone.

Essay 4: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Parents play the most important role in the bringing up of their children. In my opinion, despite some very good characteristics parents have, they can’t be the best teachers of their children.

First of all, parents are able to have knowledge in some fields, but not all the fields. It is not true that parents know everything in the world. Sometimes, they just have a passing acquaintance of some subjects. They shouldn’t teach their children something that they don’t know thoroughly. For example, a very famous physicist can’t teach his children chemistry though he is very good at physics because his knowledge of chemistry isn’t enough to teach his children. So that’s why parents always search for good teachers to teach their children what they need to learn properly.

Corporal Punishment
